Healthcare Nonprofit Levelling Up Using Gamified App

VANCOUVER - In February, SafeCare BC, a local nonprofit which focuses on continuing care providers, will launch the app "Bear in Mind", designed to help health aides cope with stresses from their daily job.

Developed by local indie game studio Raccoopack Studios, the app features scenario based training modules that teaches a wide variety of tools to help continuing care workers be more aware, analyze, and solve stressful situations that might arise from their work.

Tools for helping continuing care providers are not a new domain for SafeCare BC, which ran many workshops and webinars to help cope with a myriad of challenges. A new initiative, however, was launched to elevate the programs to be more engaging, more accessible, as well as more relevant to the target audience, and the result was "Bear in Mind".

The gamified app features an adorable and customizable teddy bear mascot which the trainee will guide through its day as a continuing care provider, allowing the trainee to make good or bad decisions that will play out in a safe, controlled manner.

The simple and intuitive interface allows health aides to immerse in the role play, allowing them to learn valuable skills without being exposed to stress factors.

Asked about the process of working with Raccoopack, Katie Schultz, the Learning & Development Advisor of SafeCare BC said: “Raccoopack was willing to meet us at our location to talk about the project. They were open to feedback and willing to offer their expertise; they were clear about what was in and out of scope, so we weren’t left guessing. The product they delivered was polished, meeting and in some instances surpassing our expectations.”

For nonprofits like SafeCare BC, there is little doubt that as the world becomes increasingly digital and connected, so should social enterprises adapt and incorporate well-proven tools like gamified apps in order to stay competitive.
