Background
British Columbia sees approximately 11,000 animal-related collisions annually. Understanding the causes and impacts of these incidents is crucial. To enhance the monitoring of wildlife sightings, Osoyoos Desert Centre sought a solution that would allow volunteers to report sightings conveniently during their walks.
Challenge
Osoyoos Desert Centre needed a mobile app to facilitate wildlife sighting reports by volunteers. The goal was to gather comprehensive data to better understand wildlife behavior and mitigate collisions effectively.
Our Solution
We developed a robust road survey app that enables volunteers to log wildlife sightings directly from their mobile devices while on walks.
Key Features
Wildlife Data Entry and Logging: Volunteers can easily enter and log wildlife sightings.
Location Tracking: Utilizes GPS capabilities to accurately record sighting locations.
Offline Support and Data Syncing: Operates seamlessly even without internet connectivity; data syncs automatically once online.
How It Works
Volunteers use the app to report sightings with detailed information including location and environmental conditions, enhancing the quality of data collected.
No internet? No problem!
We also added offline support, where submitted logs can be synchronised once the user is connected online.
Results
Successful MVP Development: Delivered a user-friendly MVP within established timelines and budget.
Future Development: Planned updates will introduce new features to further enhance functionality.
Conclusion
The road survey mobile app has empowered Osoyoos Desert Centre and its volunteers to contribute significantly to wildlife conservation efforts. With its intuitive design and robust features, the app stands ready to support ongoing research and initiatives aimed at protecting local wildlife populations.
By leveraging technology, we continue to drive positive change in environmental stewardship, one wildlife sighting report at a time.
